Saving Seed from the Farm or Garden 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Grow Benzie, 5885 M 115 (Frankfort Hwy), Benzonia
Three local seed saving enthusiasts will provide specific instructions on saving seeds. You can learn the basics of seed saving. More in-depth training will be provided for a wide variety of vegetable crops. Bring seeds to sell, trade, or give away. Table space will be provided at no cost. Agenda:
Craig will discuss reasons to save seeds, some goals and history of our region's seed saving initiative, and definitions and processes that are important to saving high quality seeds.
Some seeds are really easy to save. Craig will discuss self-pollinators like lettuce and beans.
Melons and squash are examples of varieties that can cross-pollinate readily. Seed saving can still be simple, but there are some considerations that Mike will address.
Biennial vegetables, like carrots, beets, parsnips and others present some challenges to the seed saver. Casey will explain.
Throughout the afternoon, you will be welcome to attend the specific seminars or meet with presenters or participants for conversation, networking, and seed exchange.
Lunch will be a potluck- please bring your own table service. Donation requested ($10 for individuals, $12 for families).
